A beloved seven-year-old French bulldog named Cassie died after trying to protect her owners during a terrifying bear attack at their rural home in Trinity County, California, on September 19. Jeff Wilson was outside with Cassie when a black bear suddenly attacked him. According to the family’s account, Cassie rushed between Jeff and the bear, attempting to protect him.

The commotion woke Jeff’s wife, Mallory, who ran outside to help. The bear attacked her as well, leaving both homeowners with serious injuries. Jeff suffered broken ribs and multiple bite and claw wounds, while Mallory sustained significant injuries to her head and face, along with additional wounds.

During the struggle, the bear grabbed Cassie and severely injured her. Mallory tried to drive the animal away using patio furniture, and the bear eventually fled. Cassie was rushed for emergency veterinary treatment and initially showed signs of recovery, but she died two days after the attack. Her owners said she was a beloved indoor companion who had never been intended to be a guard dog.

Despite their devastating loss, the Wilsons have said they do not blame or hate the bear. They expressed respect for the wildlife living around their rural home and described the encounter as an extraordinarily unusual and traumatic event. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Friends have established a fundraiser to help the couple with medical expenses, veterinary costs, property damage, and lost income while they recover. For Jeff and Mallory, however, no financial support can replace Cassie. Their little dog became part of a frightening night that left the family grieving—and they continue to remember her for the courage she showed when they needed her most.
