A Concerning Cluster of Ticks Near the Ear: What You Should Do

A photograph showing numerous dark, rounded organisms clustered around an ear can be alarming. While an image alone cannot confirm exactly what the organisms are, attached ticks can pose a health concern because some species are capable of transmitting bacteria and other disease-causing organisms. Their small size can also make them difficult to notice, especially around the ears and hairline.

Ticks can attach to many areas of the body, but places that are hidden by hair or difficult to see may allow them to remain unnoticed for longer. If several ticks are discovered in one area, it is a good idea to carefully check the rest of the body, including the scalp, behind the ears, under the arms, around the waist, and behind the knees.

If a tick is attached to the skin, removing it promptly is recommended. Fine-tipped tweezers can be used to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid twisting or crushing the tick, and do not try to make it detach with petroleum jelly, heat, nail polish, or other substances.

After removal, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an appropriate antiseptic. If the tick is located in or very close to the ear, is difficult to remove, or there are numerous attached organisms, seeking professional medical assistance may be the safest option.

Following a possible tick exposure, watch for symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, muscle or joint aches, or a new rash. Symptoms can vary depending on the infection and may not appear immediately. Anyone who develops concerning symptoms after a tick bite should contact a healthcare professional and mention the possible exposure.
