Don’t Throw Away Eggshells! 5 Simple Ways to Put Them to Good Use

Many people throw eggshells in the trash without realizing they can be reused in several practical ways. Made mostly of calcium carbonate, eggshells contain minerals that can benefit compost and certain garden soils. With a little preparation, these everyday kitchen scraps can also become useful materials for crafts and simple household projects.

One of the easiest ways to reuse eggshells is by adding them to your compost pile. Rinse the shells, let them dry, and crush them into small pieces so they break down more easily. They can gradually contribute calcium to compost, which may benefit soil over time. However, eggshells are not a quick fertilizer, and adding extra calcium is unnecessary if your soil already has enough.

Eggshells can also be used to start seeds. Carefully clean an eggshell, make a small drainage hole in the bottom, and fill it with potting soil. Plant a seed inside and place the shell in a suitable location for growth. When the seedling is ready to transplant, gently crush the shell to help the roots spread. Keep in mind that eggshells are fragile and may not provide enough room for seedlings that grow quickly.

For household cleaning, finely crushed eggshells can act as a mild abrasive when mixed with water and dish soap. They may help remove stubborn residue from sturdy containers, but avoid using them on nonstick cookware, delicate glass, or other surfaces that scratch easily. Always rinse thoroughly afterward, and never assume eggshells are suitable for every cleaning task.

Dried eggshells are also useful for creative projects. Crush them into small pieces to decorate picture frames, make colorful mosaics, or create collages with children. Although eggshells are sometimes promoted as a way to repel garden pests, the results are unreliable. They should not be treated as a miracle gardening solution or eaten as a homemade supplement, since improper handling can introduce harmful bacteria. Composting, crafts, and carefully chosen garden uses are practical ways to give eggshells a second life.
