The Hidden Summer Insect That Can Carry a Dangerous Disease

Summer brings sunshine, outdoor activities, and more time in the garden, but it can also bring encounters with insects that deserve attention. Assassin bugs, particularly certain species known as kissing bugs, can carry the parasite that causes Chagas disease. However, not every assassin bug carries the parasite, and the disease is not spread by every bite. Infection typically occurs when infected insect feces enter the body through a bite wound, the eyes, or the mouth.

These insects may hide in cracks, woodpiles, animal shelters, porches, and other sheltered areas around homes. Some species are more commonly found in the Americas, especially in parts of Latin America, although kissing bugs also occur in the southern United States. Because they are often active at night, people may not notice them in or around their homes.

Keeping outdoor spaces tidy can help reduce potential hiding places. Clearing clutter, maintaining gardens, organizing firewood, and checking outdoor structures can make it easier to spot insects and other pests. It is also wise to keep pet bedding and animal shelters clean, since some kissing bugs may live near areas where animals rest.

Protecting the home is another useful precaution. Seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, walls, and foundations, and repair damaged screens where insects could enter. When camping or staying in areas where kissing bugs are common, use intact window screens and bed nets when appropriate. If you find a suspected kissing bug, avoid crushing it with bare hands; use a safe collection method and contact a local health department or pest-control professional for guidance.

Chagas disease can cause fever, fatigue, headache, and swelling near the point where the parasite enters the body, although some people have few or no early symptoms. Without treatment, the infection can persist for years and eventually cause serious heart or digestive complications. If you suspect exposure, especially in a region where Chagas disease occurs, contact a healthcare professional for advice. Knowing the risks and taking sensible precautions can help you enjoy summer while staying alert to insects that may carry disease.
