‘Jeopardy!’ producer addresses contestant’s rare accommodation

If you’ve watched Jeopardy! at any point during the last week, than you’ve seen Grant DeYoung accumulating thousands of dollars over the course of four wins.

If you paid close attention to the game show, you may have noticed there’s something different about how DeYoung plays the game compared to his fellow contestants.

The grocery clerk from Arizona has been sitting in a chair!

Many took to social media to express their curiosity – and in some instances their annoyance – about DeYoung’s accommodation.

On Monday, producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss spoke about DeYoung’s arrangement for the show on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast.

“Fans have been noticing that Grant is sitting in a chair during his games,” she said. “This is something that we always offer to contestants.”

“We don’t ask why; it’s not our business,” she said, adding, “If you want a chair, we’ll give it to you.”

Jeopardy! fans on Reddit were surprised when their questions were answered by DeYoung himself. “They give it if you ask. I have some back arthritis that makes standing still for that long very difficult. I wouldn’t expect everyone who sits for Jeopardy! to disclose their reason for needing one, but I don’t mind saying mine,” DeYoung replied to a comment asking why he had a chair. Another user asked if the grocery clerk was allowed to sit as his regular day job, to which DeYoung replied, “Even better, they let me walk around and be in continuous motion, but Jeopardy hasn’t quite figured that one out yet.” Did you know any contestant is able to sit in a chair for any reason?
