Newly Discovered Footage Offers a Fresh Perspective on 9/11

Nearly 23 years ago, the world stood still as the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City were attacked, resulting in the loss of almost 3,000 lives and leaving an indelible mark on history. Now, a witness to this devastating day, Kei Sugimoto, has unearthed and shared never-before-seen footage, offering a poignant and unique perspective on the tragedy.

A Remarkable Discovery

While cleaning his closet, Sugimoto came across footage he had recorded on September 11, 2001, of the Twin Towers collapsing. Using a Sony VX2000 with a teleconverter, he captured the event from the roof of 64 St. Marks Place in NYC. Recognizing its historical significance, he decided to share the footage with the world, providing angles of the collapse not widely seen before.

The footage, which shows the towers engulfed in black smoke before their collapse, has quickly gained attention online. Many viewers have noted the rarity of these angles, as most other recordings were taken from the south or east. As one YouTube commenter observed, “You are watching these angles for the first time ever.”

A Reminder of History

The discovery has sparked conversations across social media, particularly on Reddit, where users reflected on how much undocumented history might still be hidden in attics and basements. One user remarked, “Makes me think about how much history is being stored in people’s attics or basements waiting to be unearthed.”

Sugimoto explained his decision to release the footage now, revealing that he found boxes of Hi-8, Digital-8, and DV tapes during his closet cleanup. Unfortunately, some of these tapes had deteriorated over time, becoming blank or corrupted. Understanding the urgency of preserving these memories, Sugimoto digitized the remaining footage before it could suffer the same fate.

Witnessing the Unthinkable

While Sugimoto did not initially record the second plane crashing into the towers, he realized the magnitude of the event and quickly grabbed his camera to document the unfolding tragedy. His footage now serves as a haunting reminder of the day that changed the world forever.

A Community’s Gratitude

The online community has expressed deep appreciation for Sugimoto’s decision to share this footage. Many praised the clarity and emotional depth of the recordings, acknowledging the courage it took to document such a catastrophic event.

This newly released footage is more than just a visual record; it is a powerful testament to the resilience of humanity and the importance of remembering the lives lost and the lessons learned from that fateful day.
