FIFA Issues Statement Amid Backlash Over Trump Peace Award

FIFA has issued a firm statement following calls for Donald Trump to be stripped of the 2025 FIFA Peace Prize, which he received ahead of the 2026 World Cup draw in December 2025. Trump was awarded the inaugural prize during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., where FIFA president Gianni Infantino presented him with a trophy, medal, and certificate.

During his speech, Trump claimed he had saved “tens of millions of lives” and prevented wars from breaking out. FIFA described the award as recognition for “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace” that unite people globally.

However, criticism intensified soon after. The Trump administration faced backlash following military actions involving Venezuela, including Trump’s announcement on January 2 that U.S. forces had captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Trump has also made threats of potential military action against Iran, Mexico, Colombia, and Greenland, stating the U.S. “needs Greenland” for security reasons.

European allies pushed back strongly, with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer calling the plans “completely wrong.” Despite the backlash, FIFA has defended its decision. In a statement to The Guardian, a spokesperson said FIFA “strongly supports” the peace prize and noted its close working relationship with Trump, Canada, and Mexico as World Cup co-hosts.

The statement also referenced cooperation with the White House Task Force for the 2026 World Cup. Still, The Guardian reports growing embarrassment within FIFA over the decision to honor Trump amid escalating political and military controversies.
