Vice President JD Vance shared a humorous story about balancing his White House responsibilities with life as a new father. After his fourth child, Alec, was born on July 19, Vance said President Donald Trump called him and encouraged him to take some time off. When Vance mentioned that he had a meeting scheduled for the following day, Trump jokingly told him to take the day off—suggesting that was all the leave he would receive.
Despite the joke, Vance explained that he was able to spend considerably more time with his family during the weeks following Alec’s birth. He said his priority was making sure the newborn was healthy and helping the family adjust to having another child at home while continuing to manage the demands of his position as vice president.
Alec’s arrival was also a notable moment in U.S. history. Vance became the first sitting vice president in roughly 150 years to welcome a child while serving in office. Vance and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, announced that both mother and baby were doing well and expressed their appreciation for the medical staff who cared for them.
Usha has also spoken about the family’s decision to have another child. She admitted that expanding their family initially brought some uncertainty, but those concerns quickly disappeared after Alec arrived. Their three older children have reportedly embraced their new role as siblings, eagerly taking turns holding and spending time with their baby brother.
Despite the demanding schedule that comes with being vice president, the couple says they make an effort to spend individual time with each of their children every day. For the Vance family, welcoming Alec has brought a new set of challenges but also plenty of excitement as they adjust to life with four children.
