A Surgeon Removes a Stubborn Pimple, Revealing What Lies Beneath the Skin

Acne is a common skin condition that affects people of all ages, although it is especially frequent during adolescence. It develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and sometimes bacteria. The result can be blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed pimples, or deeper lumps beneath the skin. While some blemishes disappear quickly, others can persist and may leave scars if they are not treated properly.

Videos showing a surgeon or dermatologist extracting material from a stubborn pimple often attract attention because viewers are curious about what lies beneath the skin. Depending on the type of blemish, the extracted material may contain oil, dead skin cells, and other debris. However, not every bump is acne, and some may be cysts or other skin conditions that require a different approach to treatment.

Several factors contribute to acne, including genetics, hormonal changes, and excess oil production. Hormones called androgens can stimulate the skin’s oil glands, making clogged pores more likely. A bacterium known as Cutibacterium acnes also plays a role in inflammation associated with certain types of acne. These factors help explain why some people experience persistent breakouts even when they follow a regular skincare routine.

Acne can affect more than a person’s appearance. Persistent breakouts may cause embarrassment, frustration, and reduced self-confidence. In some cases, severe acne can contribute to anxiety or depression. Although diet may influence acne in some individuals, the relationship varies, and acne is not simply a result of poor hygiene. Washing the skin too aggressively can actually cause irritation and make symptoms worse.

Dermatologists can recommend treatments based on the type and severity of acne, including topical medications, prescription treatments, and professional extraction when appropriate. Trying to squeeze deep or painful pimples at home can increase inflammation, infection risk, and scarring. If a lump is unusually large, painful, or persistent, seeking professional advice is the safest way to determine what it is and how to treat it.
