A Tick Bite on Your Child? Here’s What Every Parent Should Know

Finding a tick attached to your child’s skin can be frightening, especially because some ticks carry bacteria that cause serious illnesses. However, not every tick bite leads to infection. Knowing how to remove a tick safely and recognize possible warning signs can help parents protect their children without unnecessary panic.

If you discover a tick, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure until it releases. Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or covering the tick with petroleum jelly, as these methods may make removal more difficult. Afterward, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.

Once the tick has been removed, make a note of the date and the part of the body where the bite occurred. Taking a photograph of the bite and saving the tick in a sealed container may help a healthcare professional identify it if necessary. Do not assume your child is safe simply because the tick has been removed. Some tick-borne infections can develop days or even weeks later.

Watch your child for symptoms such as fever, headache, unusual tiredness, muscle or joint pain, or a spreading rash. A rash does not always appear, so other symptoms should not be ignored. Contact a healthcare professional if your child becomes unwell after a tick bite. Seek urgent medical attention if your child develops severe symptoms, including difficulty breathing, confusion, or a severe headache with a stiff neck.

Prevention is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of tick bites. Dress children in protective clothing, use age-appropriate insect repellents according to the product instructions, and check their skin, hair, and clothing after playing outdoors. Pay particular attention to the scalp, behind the ears, under the arms, and around the waist. Prompt removal and awareness of warning signs can make a meaningful difference in protecting your child’s health.
