I Lent My Neighbor My Mom’s Mixer—What She Returned Made Me Rethink Everything

My neighbor Denise had borrowed so many things from me that I had stopped keeping track. She often promised to return them quickly, but they sometimes came back dirty, damaged, or missing parts. When she asked to borrow my cream-colored KitchenAid mixer, a treasured gift my mother bought in 1989, I hesitated. After Mom passed away, I had kept the mixer because its scratches, tiny enamel chip, and familiar motor reminded me of her kitchen. Still, I agreed after Denise promised to return it that Saturday.

When she brought it back, my heart sank. The mixer was covered in dried frosting and sticky residue. Worse, when I plugged it in, the motor began grinding before stopping completely. A technician named Greg discovered that it had overheated because Denise had overloaded it and continued using it even after it started struggling. The repair cost $347. When I asked Denise to help pay, she refused, saying she wasn’t going to spend that much repairing an old mixer.

I paid for the repair, but the experience made me realize I needed clearer boundaries. Later, when Denise asked to borrow my cooler, crock pot, and folding tables, I offered a simple lending agreement instead. Everything had to be returned clean, dry, on time, and undamaged, along with a refundable $350 deposit. She initially thought I was being unreasonable and decided to rent the equipment instead.

Unfortunately for her, the rental company delivered the wrong items. Denise eventually returned and agreed to my terms. The party went smoothly, and she brought everything back the following day in excellent condition. I returned her deposit immediately. She also apologized and admitted that she should have stopped using my mixer when it began struggling.

When Greg finally returned my repaired mixer, its familiar motor sounded just as it had before. That weekend, my daughter Sophie and I used it to make Mom’s chocolate cake. The old scratches and tiny chip were still there, but the mixer now carried an additional lesson: being generous is wonderful, but protecting what matters to you is important too.
