The Ransom Messages That Deepened the Mystery of Nancy Guthrie

Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her Tucson-area home after being dropped off there shortly before 10 p.m. on January 31, 2026. When her family realized she was missing, authorities launched a major investigation involving the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. Evidence from her home and surveillance material became important parts of the search as investigators tried to reconstruct what happened during the early-morning hours.

Then came a disturbing message. On February 2, an anonymous ransom note was sent to a Tucson television station and addressed to Savannah Guthrie. The writer claimed Nancy was alive and demanded millions of dollars in cryptocurrency for her return. The message included details about Nancy’s home, including her white Apple Watch and a damaged backyard floodlight, raising questions about how much the sender knew about the residence.

Nancy’s family publicly pleaded for proof that she was alive and urged whoever had information to communicate with them. But the ransom deadline passed, and Nancy did not return. Four days later, another anonymous message was sent to the same station. This time, the writer claimed Nancy had died shortly after being taken and that her remains had been left in a natural area. Authorities emphasized that the claims had not been independently verified.

Months later, investigators released the messages publicly in the hope that someone might recognize the language, wording or writing style and provide a lead. For Savannah and her siblings, however, the uncertainty remained agonizing. They had no confirmed location for Nancy and no definitive answer about what happened after she arrived home.

By September 2026, Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remained unresolved, with no publicly identified suspect and no confirmed location of her remains. The anonymous messages may ultimately prove important, but they are not, by themselves, proof of what happened to Nancy. For her family, the investigation is more than a criminal case—it is the search for a mother, grandmother and loved one whose absence has left them waiting for the one thing they still desperately need: the truth.
