Which Side of a Fence Should Face Your Neighbor? The Answer May Surprise You

When I decided to build a fence around my backyard, I thought the process would be straightforward. Then I kept hearing the same piece of advice: “Put the finished side toward your neighbor.” The finished side is usually the cleaner, more attractive surface without exposed posts and rails, while the unfinished side shows the supporting framework.

But is that actually a legal requirement? Not necessarily. In many areas, there is no universal rule requiring homeowners to face the finished side toward a neighbor. Instead, it has traditionally been viewed as a matter of courtesy. Still, local governments, neighborhoods, and homeowners’ associations can have their own regulations, so assumptions can sometimes lead to problems.

The location of the fence matters, too. If it sits completely within your property boundaries, you may have more freedom over its design and orientation. A fence built directly on a property line can be different because it may be considered shared. In those situations, decisions about construction, maintenance, and repairs may need to involve both property owners.

There are also practical reasons why someone might choose a different arrangement. Some fences are designed to look attractive from both sides, while others place rails on the inside for security. The shape of the yard, slopes, trees, buildings, sunlight, and access for maintenance can all influence the best orientation.

Before installing a fence, check your local regulations, confirm exactly where your property line is, and communicate with your neighbor. I learned that the “finished side out” rule is often more about being considerate than following a universal law. Ultimately, the best choice is the one that follows local requirements while creating a fair and practical solution for everyone.
